How can I replace glass on fixed windows?
Peachtree strongly recommends the use of safety glasses and protective gloves when working with glass.
Step #1: To remove damaged glass:
- Remove the interior wood stops.
- Cut silicone spots surrounding the glass from interior. From the outside, cut the glazing between the glass and the aluminum. Start at the top and sides.
- Once you get to the bottom, glass will lean into the house.
- Have someone inside the house "catch" the glass.
- Remove glass and clean off original glazing tape or silicone.
Step #2: Install new glass:
- Use glazing tape or silicone caulking around the perimeter of the frame opening.
- Put glass setting blocks about 6" from corners on the sill. This separates the glass from the aluminum.
- Install new glass, pressing glass against the exterior aluminum frame.
- Reinstall wood stops, securing with finishing nails.
- After 2 - 3 days, remove any excess glazing tape or silicone from exterior of glass.
- Use caution to prevent scratching the glass.
